flutter

map of lights
to the city center
the heart of it all
as you travel away
the brilliance
fades out, burns to ash
being lost in the darkness is disorienting
and distant
and sometimes
the core seems so far removed
my eyes are shut
so i wouldn't even know if the shine was there

i flutter my lashes
the glare creeps in
its overwhelming
i don't know if i want to keep opening them
continue the fight
but i will
and one day
i will just revel in the rays
fully open
again
