DRESSed down?!?

for fashionistas who like comfort as much as the next person...

i give you, the sweatshirt dress. its bloody briliant!

my obsession with sweatshirts&tshirts began as a 3 year old toddler who wanted to wear her favourite ones to church and fancy family dinners. it worked in my favor to a degree in the 80s that were fond of blucky sweats&long tees with leggings but a mother who worked in fashion for years and burgeoning interest&obvious skills in ensemble assemblage put an end to all that nonsense early on.
but, alas, the urge has returned and now it can be satiated with the uprising of sweatshirty/tshirty dresses out there.
the classic lines &stitching of old skool tees, heather greys, and those comfy cozy fabrics that only get better with age.
[i was already obsessed with the fabrics enough to invest in several sets of tshirt sheets and a sweatshirt blanket for my luxurious bed hah]

i believe the tshirt dress niche to be occupied nicely by the HIP SIMPLE clean lines at american apparel.
my focus is on the sweatshirt dress today. the thick but soft&fuzzy 'on the inside' texture that reminds you of college midterm mornings when you didnt have the strength to throw much else on as you were running on several hours of sleep for 7 days and perhaps stomping you way to impending doom. But that piece of clothing gave your the security and mini-indulge that when it was all over, you'd soon be at home in bed.
the one i got was from forever21 (i know the shame, but its adorable-i can't stop the compliments EVERYTIME i wear it)
the reasonable retail circuit has cute cheap ones at the likes of old navy and urban (respectively). honestly, the dresses are built from basics and these companies has built their empires on that premise, i think they are making these dresses are out quality materials stitched in quality ways.
[these both come in BLACK as well]

the high fashion conquistadoras of ELLE featured the sweatshirt dress (or tunic) as a shop musthave for Fall '07 and i couldn't agree more. They suggested looks from Vera's lavender label hemmed in sequins, a Rebecca Taylor look taken up a notch in puckered merino wool and a Lela Rose jersey tee dress with rouched taffeta sleeves. they (and i) suggest taking your DRESSed down look UP, when necessary, to another level with a chic-chic (think sequins, feathers, evening fabricated, and/or bejewelled) mini/knee-length skirt or cocktail frock underneath with some (Spectator or Low Bootie) spectacular high heels (or new studded Marc flats) to make the comfy, also tre chic.

in conclusion, you know you want to go out there to buy one of these DRESSed down sweatshirt dresses for running out to do errands with your Chucks or out on the town like an ELLE lady. good luck! send pictures of success stories pleaseeeeeeeee*

military (wo)man

a black&white fantasy (ok, with a lil purple)

this is my look of the day.
i love the androgeny.
i love the hint of sashed purple colour. (who knew long tassled scarfs were so hot?)
i love the feminine silhouette with mascualine pieces.
i love military formals for girls.
i love WHITE as the main pieces only accented with killer BLACK extras.
i love the shoulders&lapel on that structured jacket.
i love the crop jacket with tails (almost a train) look.
i love this girls bob.
i love love love those boots.

you got The Moneymaker

this is your chance to make it...

Rilo Kiley-The Moneymaker

rilo kiley is an old fav but this new album is going to be insane. thought i'd share this with ya'll as i have been freaking out about it for a month since it premiered on myspace. the rest of the album promises to be very edgy addressing issues often ignored in the world (ie porn industry as we are seeing here). the new sound is TOTALLY unexpected as jenny's side project with the watson twins has had strong southern roots and the boys who dabble with the elected have been getting more and more acoustic. in my head, ANY jenny lewis ballad is priceless (this song despite its more catchy-not heartwrenching as usual-lyrics is no exception), the guitar riff on this is delicious, so rock'n'roll yet loungy all at the same time. can you dig it?

***********p.s. realized like a half hr after i posted this that THE WHOLE NEW ALBUM is on their myspace profile for preview
http://www.myspace.com/rilokiley
OH THIS IS FUCKING AMAZING! check it out NOW, album out on the 21st!!!

Glamourpusssssss

claim to fame, clamour for glamour

The Ark- Clamour for Glamour

so come and get it
get it good
like i knew you would!

the swedes-du-jour that i heart are these sexy glam guys. this song is not only catchy but the lyrics are hilarious. they've been a band since they were fourteen years old and are always writing controversial songs about homosexual's rights to have children and 9/11 at the swedish embassy in DC eek (of course, i love the drama). they ALSO won some huge popular vote contest in their country for the song: The Worrying Kind (its quality, check it out).

they are relatively new to the states but i sense stayign potential.
just jump around to this, i promise it'll make you smile.

*what about the girl with loneliness*

i like your sundress.

Ben Kweller- Sundress
one of my many summer anthems (BUT THIS IS THE TOP!) little ben kweller is all grown up, but his lyrics still embraces the little boy inside of him who loves whimsy. and i say thank you for that. he has stuck to the roots of his sound with acoustic guitar and piano through the years since radish. the video is very homevideo summer love in coney island (love those palm tree fountains out there!) but i love because of this of course. download it pronto.

from the inside out
you're so beautiful
i wanna hold you in my hand
i do everything you want me to

just in case, you don't have older stuff of his (i know this is next to impossible, but just in case)
check out the songs: Cali, In Other Words, Girl In Between, and The Rules.

enjoy this breathe of indie fresh air.

Mini Mary

you too can be a *true* chelsea girl

so lately, i have been a fashion funk looking for inspiration-mostly i end of looking to the streets (facehunter.org) but stumbled across an oldie but goodie. Ms. Mary Quant, the queen of the miniskirt, patterned/coloured tights (PURE GENUIS!) and the hotpants, is it. In my opinion, she was the much cooler, edgier Twiggy (but not really a model, though she dabbled, she was a designer & built a makeup/housewares mini-empire). essentially, she shoudl be who people remember from 60s british fashion instead.

evoke the swinging 60s of London yourself, with multi-colored stripes, shorties, blunt bobs, tons of eye-makeup and plastic raincoats.
then you too can channel ms. quant.

p.s. despite my extreme summer blonde-ness, mary is making me want to go dark AGAIN.
with a very chic bubble bob for fall.

you're not a clock, you're a TIME BOMB baby

"i'm gonna sleep with the next person i meet"

The Format - Time Bomb
so this song currently is my anthem, but the band is indie pop at its best. Dog Problems is the new album, and a lot of people love the song the album is name for. I am less convinced by it, but there are many hidden gems in these boys repatiore. Time Bomb is not only catchy but has a great message (oh gosh i can't believe i just pulled out that card, but its true) and i can relate. the lyrics are witty and humorous. She Doesn't Get It is hilarious and clever. You can't help sing along to these boys and dance to the beat up&down. I heart On the Porch too. dig around the Format's myspace and stuff, you'll find some lovely musik too.

all the girls pose the same for pictures
all the boys gots the same girl's hair
can i take you home? i know it's wrong
but i know your type

BONDE DO ROLE!

Bonde do Role - Funk da Esfiha
their actual musik videos are really low budget (and sorta cheesy for that matter, not to knock em but its true), and i thought this great vid from SXSW was genuine bonde do role cause it shows them as a LIVE MUSIK experience. they are such an amazing live band, and i think this vid sums it up. I saw these guys open for the Klaxons in bklyn, and they kick soo much @$$. I was jumping up and down, despite being wedged between the front speakers. marina the lead singer is so stellar musically & fashionable and well...totally nuts! crazy brazilians singing in portuguese, very rock/hip hop fusion (there is a rapper Gorky with the strangest voice haha), high enery and ALWAYS tons of fun. Marina Gasolina is high energy tune that is constantly on repeat on my iPod. Their new album With Lasers is quality, and on sale on iTunes. hit it up

It was dirty, a dream came true..

i loved my english romance....

The Teenagers - Homecoming
this little diddy is naughty and silly. perfect explanation of the male take on vacation flings and the female romanticizes version hehe. i love the fashion and cute frenchlooks of the boys and girls in the video. also when have you ever known me to turn down lyrics like this:
he was wearing wearing skinny jeans
had funky hair
and the cutest british accent ever
straight away i could tell he was ROCKER!
from his sexy attitude and the way he looked at me
hmm he is totally awesome
oh my god i think i am in love

ain't that always the way...

'tis the season

As modernity has made the union of marriage a very controversial subject, my mind plays tricks on me when the spring/summer months still make me think of brides and weddings. sadly, i have only attended one wedding and it was very simple (as it was the bride's second). also as a young woman who is unsure if she even wants to give someone "forever" and then, if i'll even legally bind it because marriage is not yet an equal right merely a religious constrant for closeminded heterosexuals. when many loving couples can't seal their love by law and zillions of ridiculous couples run through marriages like toliet paper, i wonder about the traditions of weddings. thus the extravagant trains and ornate dresses, romantic locales and whimsical ceremonies may become, dare i say it, obsolete. so therefore i am extremely torn when i see these grand gowns that flutter down the runway last as our couturiers reveal their bridal looks. i saw this and couldn't help but share it. they may one day dissapear forever.

the flouncy skirt, and avante garde, slightly daring neckline is unexpected. the spontaneous random loops of the simple but large veil is delicious. i would be a vivienne westwood bride anyday. wouldn't you?
